These self-portraits were made using the technique of dripping. I was inspired by Pollocks paintings where he would “drip” lines onto canvas. I decided to place large sheets of paper on the floor, and then “drip” – basically squeezing a bottle of paint held upside down – while looking at myself in the mirror or at another person. I surprised myself seeing how the figures appeared on the paper without even looking at it.
When I did the self-portraits I always did them at dusk in an unlit room with an open window. This made the image of myself in the mirror appear blurred, half covered in shadows, and had interesting effects on the lines I dripped.
